History of Cornerstone

Cornerstone Insurance Group has roots in St. Louis dating back to 1971. It’s our mission to give back to the the place we call home, to strengthen our community and the people who work in it, and to help the businesses we partner with in every capacity possible.

1971

Wilson & Associates is founded and opens its first office in downtown St. Louis. Wilson & Associates was a commercial insurance and employee benefits firm founded by David D. Wilson. 

1989

Corporate Benefit Consultants, is founded in Chesterfield, MO, by Richard Steinbaum, co-founder of Cornerstone Insurance Group. 

1991

Cody Wilson, co-founder of Cornerstone Insurance Group, joins Wilson & Associates. 

1995

Cody Wilson becomes President of Wilson & Associates, serving clients alongside his father David and overseeing 15 employees.  

2001

The employee benefits administration company Corporate Benefit Consultants grows to employ 17 employees.

2005

Wilson & Associates merges with Corporate Benefit Consultants to form Cornerstone Insurance Group. The merger allows Cornerstone to offer clients more resources, including third-party administrator services such as risk management and human resources solutions.

Also this year, Cornerstone grows to 35 employees and moves to Creve Coeur, Mo. 

2010

Cornerstone grows to employ more than 70 people. 

2012

Cornerstone wins the 2012 Healthiest Employer Awards, hosted by the St. Louis Business Journal. CIG has placed as a finalist in the competition every year since its inception in 2011, placing first in the small employer category in 2012 and 2014.

2013

Cornerstone partners with St. Louis nonprofit Lift for Life Gym. For more than three years, Cornerstone employees prepared dinner for the youth involved in the after-school program, serving more than 1,700 dinners over the years at Lift for Life Gym!

Also this year, the Cornerstone team grows to more than 100 employees.

2014

Cornerstone Employer Solutions is founded. CES is a Professional Employer Organization, providing Cornerstone clients with more resources and options for their employee benefits, human resources, payroll, and workers’ compensation needs.

Baugher & Associates, an employee benefits firm located in Glen Carbon, IL, joins the Cornerstone team.

Also in 2014, Cornerstone is named a Top Company in St. Louis by Small Business Monthly.

2016

Cornerstone dedicates board room to Wilson & Associates founder David D. Wilson.

2017

Cornerstone named a best place to work in St. Louis by the St. Louis Business Journal.

Also in 2017, employees begin leading a community outreach committee, providing 8 hours of paid volunteer time annually for each employee. The Cornerstone Initiative benefits a local nonprofit every quarter.

2018

Cornerstone named a Best Place to Work in St. Louis by the St. Louis Business Journal for the second year in a row!
